I’m a critic, scholar and an essayist from Chiba, Japan.
I am currently a PhD student at Princeton in English, working on a dissertation on the Asiatic logic of film noir. I write a column on film and the environment for Orion Magazine.
My work on film and photography have appeared in The New Yorker, Aperture Magazine, Criterion, New York Review of Books, The Point, and elsewhere. I’ve been awarded fellowships from Kundiman, the Breadloaf Writers’ Conference, and the Tin House Summer Workshop. My BA is from Harvard College, and I have an MFA in creative nonfiction from Columbia University. On off days, you can find me dancing alone in a karaoke booth.
